Theme and subject
The theme of the Secrets of the Phoenix slot is as the name suggests, ancient civilisations set in South America, imagine that you are in the ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ film and you will get the idea.
To be perfectly honest, when you are playing the game, the theme and atmosphere of the game doesn’t exactly transport you off to the land of the Aztecs, you could basically be playing any game and it is not exactly an enthralling experience, unless you hit the bonus rounds that is.
This is a shame because Gamesys are usually on the ball when comes to wonderfully portraying the atmosphere of a game, but they have unfortunately fallen short on this occasion.
The saving grace of this game would have to be the tumbling reels feature because once that feature begins, it not only grabs the players attention but can also prove to be extremely profitable.
As with any slot game, if a player has a profitable session, the Secrets of the Phoenix slot could be regarded as their favourite and one which they will recommend to all of their friends but putting sentiment to one side, it is not one of the best games that is out there.
Just one more thing to add about the gameplay and that is it is very fast.
You sometimes find that the tumbling reels feature will slow a game down but not with the Secrets of the Phoenix slot, so bear that in mind if you start to play and keep a close eye on your credit balance because it is easy to let it slip away from you.
Symbols and soundtrack
The soundtrack is ok and does the job that it is meant to do.
The usual Aztec sounds are in abundance and again, think back to Harrison Ford and the ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ and you will be able to picture the scene.
The symbols are basic to say the least.
Compare these symbols to a slot like Rainbow Riches and you will see that not a lot of thought seems to have gone into them.
You could argue that they have not just gone with the usual Ten, Jack, Queen, King and Ace, but the symbols that they have chosen are not exactly vibrant in colour or detail.
The symbols basically consist of images of stone pillars, faces carved out of stone and orbs of animals.
The scatter symbol is an Aztec mask and the wild symbol is represented by an image of a burning phoenix.
As already mentioned though, the saving grace of this game is the cascading reels which can turn a small win into one which is much larger.
If you are not familiar with how the cascading reels works, when you have a winning pay line, the symbols which form this pay line disappear and the symbols directly above them drop into their place.
This can go on indefinitely with each drop producing a win and it has to be said, it is a lovely feeling when you can see winning lines in advance before they have even dropped down.
Sometimes you just know that it is going to be your lucky day because every drop forms a winning pay line, not all of the time, obviously, but it does happen and the wins can soon mount up.
Bonus options
Even if you are not overly impressed by the overall quality of the Secrets of the Phoenix slot, the bonus options are exciting and can prove to be lucrative.
It could be described as being a little on the complicated side though so listen up.
The bonus round is triggered when at least four of the cascading reel wins occur, so what that basically means is that once you get four wins in a row, the bonus is awarded.
There is a stone pillar (in fitting with the general theme of the slot) and this lights up after each win so that you can see how many free spins you have been awarded.
Four cascading wins results in seven free spins, five results in ten free spins, six results in fifteen free spins, seven results in twenty free spins and eight cascading wins results in an impressive twenty five free spins.
That’s not the end of it though because there is something called the Phoenix Stacked Wild feature and this is triggered when the symbols in one reel completely disappear because of the tumbling wins.
This results in a reel full of stacked wilds which means that the wins can soon mount up and this is obviously one of the most lucrative aspects of the Secrets of the Phoenix slot
The only negative aspect of this part of the bonus is that it only last for one cascade drop but don’t under estimate how profitable this can be.
The RTP of this slot is quite low which means that there are losing runs during the normal game play but the bonus rounds do come up more often than you might first think.
Pros and cons
As already mentioned, the Secrets of the Phoenix slot is a funny old game.
On first sight it doesn’t really look like much to shout home about but when the bonus round drops it starts to get a little bit interesting.
There are good and bad points to this game so let’s take a closer look and the aspects that you should take notice of.
Pros
- Out of the Gamesys stable so the pedigree of the slot is definitely there
- The bonus round is highly entertaining
- Very quick and easy to play
- The RTP is relatively low but the bonus rounds do pop up quite often
Cons
- Starting to look extremely tired and dated
- Very few online casinos offer the game
- If the bonus rounds don’t pop up there can be long losing runs
- The soundtrack is pretty non-descript and doesn’t really enhance the game
Similar games
If you enjoyed playing the Secrets of the Phoenix slot there are other games which are on offer which you will probably find to be more enjoyable.
In particular, and if you love the tumbling reels effect, Gonzos Quest by NetEnt.
This slot is basically on a completely different level to the Secrets of the Phoenix slot and it is of little wonder why it is one of the most popular games out there.
Fun to play as well as an ongoing option which multiplies each consecutive win after the first one.
All in all, a great game and one which you will enjoy.
Another slot with this feature which is worth a mention is the Football Star slot by Microgamng (not to be confused with the Football Stars slot by Playtech)
This one is actually a very entertaining slot, especially if you like football and the tumbling reels add that little bit of excitement during normal game play.
Where to play
The online casinos which offer the Secrets of the Phoenix slot is quite limited.
It is possible to find the game though and it is a good idea to see if there are any sign up bonuses which you can use to play the game.
